How to Create a Free QR Code for Your Twitch Channel

Creating a free QR code for Twitch can help you market the channel. You can use them in a variety of ways and they are more effective at generating views and interest than a lot of folks realize. For one thing, you can use them both on and offline.
At the end of the day, a QR code is simple to make and can accentuate your marketing tactics. Whether you’re handing out business cards in person or displaying it as part of your overlay, a QR code for your Twitch stream can work some wonders.
I’ll dive a bit into a few ideas in a moment. But for now, let’s dive into making a QR code.
Creating a QR Code for Twitch
For this tutorial, we’re going to use QR Generator. It’s a free web-based app that has a lot of flexibility and customization when generating QR codes.
There are quite a few QR code generators online if you’re not pleased with this one. Just be careful where you get your codes from as there are some that will hack the URL and send users to nefarious websites.
Anyway, start by visiting QRGenerator.org.
Step 1: Add the URL
In the URL field, add your Twitch channel address. This will be the entire URL of your channel and can be easily found by visiting your Twitch home page.
Technically, you can use any URL you’d like. I’ll go over the different ways to use the QR code a bit later, but essentially, you can aim it at your YouTube channel or if you have a charity profile you’d like visitors to see.
Once you add the URL, QR Generator will automatically generate the image on the right.
From here, you can skip to Step 7 and download the code. The next several steps are customization options if you want to add more pizzazz to the image.
Step 2: Customize with Color (optional)
If you’d like to offer something with a bit more visual appeal, you can select a custom color for your QR code. This will change the image on the right from the black layout to any color you wish.
Click on the “Colors” option below the URL.
From here, you can use hexadecimal codes to choose the fore and background colors of your QR code. If you’re unsure what the hexadecimal code is for a specific color, a color picker tool will open when you click into either of these fields.
Select the color you want to use. For this tutorial, I’m going to make it a deep blue.
Make sure the foreground and background colors are contrasting. If they are too close together, the QR code may fail as it could be too difficult to read the blocks in the image.
When you select the color, click off from the chooser and the QR code will change.
Step 3: Edit the QR Code Design (optional)
If you’d like to add a bit of design flair, you can change the type of patterns, borders, and marker centers the QR code uses. These are all completely optional, so you don’t have to use the function.
By clicking on Design, you can select from a variety of appearances.
Choose the options you want to implement, and the code on the right will change.
Step 4: Add a Logo (optional)
QR Generator has a few logos you can use if you wish. Most of the more popular social media logos and apps are available, but you can also upload your own.
For this tutorial, I’m going to add the Twitch logo to the center. That’s because the QR code is aimed at my Twitch channel. That way, it’s obvious to the user where the link will take them.
Twitch isn’t available in the list of logos, but you can find it easily in Google Images. It’s best if you use a PNG file type for the QR generator.
Step 5: Add a Frame (optional)
Another optional feature is adding a frame to the QR code. There are only a handful of frame types and fonts to choose from, but you can add a text label to the QR code as a call-to-action, such as saying “Scan Me.”
Step 6: Fine Tune Options (optional)
Lastly, you can change the overall size and precision of the QR code itself. These are in the “Options” section but don’t really need adjusting unless you need an absolute size ranging from 200 pixels up to 800 pixels.
For the most part, you can use the QR code as-is without changing the size or precision, but this is totally up to you.
Step 7: Download Your Twitch QR Code
After customizing the code, it’s time to download. Click the “Save” button under the QR code.
From here, you can choose to download the PNG, SVG, or PDF version of the image. You can also choose to send it directly to your printer.
When you click on one of the image types, your computer will download the file as you would any other. In this case, I’m going to save the PNG version so that I can use it in overlays and other locations online and in the real world.
That’s all there is to it. Creating a QR code for your Twitch channel is quick and easy and has the potential to boost recognition and visitation. Of course, that also depends on how you use it.
7 Ways to Use a QR Code On Twitch
There are a number of ways you can use a QR code for just about any purpose. Since you’re able to create one using any URL, you can also use it as a way to cross-promote platforms or send users directly to online shops.
A few ideas for using a QR code include:
- Adding to Stream Overlays
As a PNG file, it’s easy to add a QR code to overlays you plan to use on Twitch. These are easily accessible, and I’ve had people use them from their televisions while watching a stream. - Advertising Charity Pages such as Extra Life
During charity events like Extra Life, you can link a QR code directly to your donation page. You can add a bit of flair to it and add the Extra Life logo to the center of the QR code. - Promoting Your Channels During Streams
Why not promote your other channels during a live stream? You can stream to Twitch while having a code aimed at your YouTube channel or any other social media site. - Share QRs on Social Media
Speaking of social media, you can post QR codes on most platforms to advertise your Twitch channel or anything else you’d like to share. - Printed On Stationary or Other Physical Materials
As an author, I have a print-out of the QR codes for my books and author blog. The point is that you can print them out as physical materials for virtually any location or purpose. - Add as an Email Signature
I’ve seen QR codes as part of an email signature. It can add a layer of professionalism if you’re planning to build something grand from your Twitch channel. - Add as a Twitch Panel
Although there aren’t specific rules for using QR codes in Twitch streams and panels, you’ll still want to make sure you’re aiming them at relevant sites. Don’t be one of those bottom feeders who purposely mislead viewers.
These are just a handful of ways I can think of off the top of my head of promoting a QR code for and within Twitch. What marketing methods can you think of that include the use of a QR code?
What About Making a Dynamic QR Code?
Dynamic QR codes are those that can be tracked and changed at any time. However, most platforms do not offer free dynamic codes, and you’ll have to sign up with a paid subscription to make them.
The plus side is that you’ll be able to see how often the codes are used as well as a few other helpful metrics. The data could also help you determine what social platforms are the most effective for QR codes.
When signing up for a paid subscription to sites like QR Generator, you’ll get a lot more than just tracking data. You can also enable things like device targeting, A/B testing, expiration dates, and a whole lot more.
The real question is whether or not the paid subscriptions are worth the money.
If you want to give these services a try, I suggest only paying for a month. Then, if it’s something you’ll wind up using more often, upgrade to an annual plan as it will often save you a bit of cash.
For example, the annual payment rates for QR Generator save you 30% as opposed to paying each month.
How Do You Market Your Channel?
A QR code for your Twitch channel is but a small addition to marketing. There are a lot of ways you can share your channel, especially on the Internet. Probably one of your best bets is social media. Gamers of all kinds gather on sites like Twitter to share streams and whatnot.
And I’ve seen a lot of Twitch streamers take to Threads lately.
The bottom line is that you need to get your channel in front of as many people as possible. No one is going to watch the channel if they don’t know it exists. You can only depend on search and browse for so much.
