11 Easy Ways to Promote Your Twitch Channel

Marketing is a vital element for any creator to succeed, and there are a lot of ways you can promote your Twitch channel to gain a wider audience. The best part is that a lot of them won’t cost you a single penny. However, it will require an investment of time on your behalf.

Sure, you can get a few views here and there just by streaming. But why not increase the likelihood of gaining a large and dedicated audience?

The bottom line is that the more people who watch your stream, the more money you’ll make overall. I’m talking about more than just the piddly ad revenue Twitch gives its affiliates and partners.

How to Promote Your Twitch Channel Wisely

If no one knows you exist, no one’s going to watch. And although you might pick up a few viewers here and there, depending on the game you’re playing, getting your name and/brand out there will greatly improve your chances of success.

So, how can you start marketing your Twitch channel?

1. Flesh Out Your Twitch Channel and Profile

First things first…flesh out the information on your channel and profile. The more bland and incomplete it is, the less likely anyone is going to believe you’re a real streamer.

This includes adding panels to Twitch, offering some information about yourself, links to donation sites, and more. People are more likely to subscribe and follow if they have a good idea of who you are in general.

You don’t have to offer too much personal information. But never underestimate the value of being personable and interactive when it comes to engaging your audience. Viewers want to feel like they matter and that they are connected to you on some level.

2. Consider Multistreaming

One of the best ways to promote any channel, regardless of platform, is to multistream. This lets you branch out and engage a much larger audience from a single instance of your broadcast.

For instance, I simultaneously stream to Twitch and YouTube every Sunday night. This means I am seen by two separate audiences at the same time. And thanks to Streamer.bot, I can monitor the chat from a single window. I don’t have to open a ton of browser tabs today.

There are a number of ways you can stream to multiple platforms. Find the best one that works for you and expand your audience.

Why not work for monetization on both Twitch and YouTube at the same time? Once both channels are monetized, you can double your revenue streams. This doesn’t include selling merch or gaining donations and tips from both channels.

3. Start a YouTube Channel

Colorado Plays YouTube Channel

Speaking of YouTube, Twitch isn’t the only video platform. A lot of streamers take clips from Twitch streaming and then upload them as videos on demand on YouTube. It’s a great way to expand your brand.

This was a lot more prevalent prior to 2023, when Twitch wouldn’t allow live multistreaming for associates. Nowadays, it’s not so much of a hassle.

In any case, creating a YouTube channel of your gameplay or top interesting moments can quickly grow your audience. Keep in mind that YouTube is one of the largest search engines on the Internet, second only to Google. Utilize what it can do for you.

Twitch is great for live streaming, but YouTube is superior for VoD content. And you can repurpose streams to fit that dynamic. Just about every popular streamer on Twitch has a YouTube channel for a reason.

4. Using a Blog to Gain Viewers

A great way to promote your Twitch channel is to create your own blog. Writing some good gaming content can get people to your site from search results pages. Then, you can utilize a Twitch embed of your live stream for people to watch. This can quickly turn into follows and watch time.

At our peak, we averaged enough views and subscribers, thanks to the website’s embedded video, to hit associate status relatively quickly. Coincidentally, you can see the live stream embedded either on the sidebar of this page (desktop) or at the bottom when you scroll down (mobile).

The caveat is that you need to have some good blog content that people want to read.

For us, the majority of the Twitch views came from OBS and XSplit tutorials. We’re rebuilding the blog today, so I’m not sure what generates the most interest. But having the blog has been a boon to the gaming channel.

This is in addition to earning a bit more revenue, thanks to AdSense and affiliate links.

5. Set Up a Substack Account

Substack is a very popular newsletter app that is free to join. This gives viewers the chance to follow you beyond Twitch while also being searchable in Google.

You can offer insights, run contests, give access to paid members-only posts, share videos, upload podcasts, and really expand your brand.

If you don’t want to run a blog or don’t currently have the money, Substack is a great alternative to get the ball rolling while marketing your Twitch channel. You can still reach quite a few people while improving the chances of gaining viewers and making more money.

6. Collaborating With Other Streamers

Collaborations are nice because you’re essentially pooling an audience. People who watch one streamer might not realize you also have a channel and may wind up following you as well.

These are usually some of the better performing live streams I have for the YouTube writing channel. When another YouTuber decides to be on my show, a lot of their audience comes over. Some of them subscribe, and some don’t. But I always have more viewership and total watch time with collaborative episodes.

The trick is to collaborate with someone who has similar interests or similar content. If the audiences are too different, collaborations are less effective.

7. Sharing On Social Media

One of the most over-stated methods to promote your Twitch channel is to be active on social media. This is probably because of the fact that social media is free to use and has the potential to reach a large audience.

Of course, it takes a long time to build up a community on social media that will translate into viewers. Just because you share something on Twitter or Threads doesn’t mean a ton of people are going to flock to your live stream.

Despite social media being a dumpster fire in most cases, these sites are still viable to help grow an audience and brand. And if you use tools like Buffer to share social posts, you can streamline the process.

8. Join Various Discord Servers

vidIQ Discord Server

One of the most popular chat platforms for gamers is Discord. In fact, I have a Discord channel for all three of my online brands. They are great for community building and sharing.

There are a vast number of gaming Discord servers you can use to help promote your Twitch channel. Although most frown on shameless links without rhyme or reason, you can still gain recognition and share your content with interested parties.

I am a member of several Twitch streamer’s Discord channels and have met some really nice folks. However, you want to be careful about sharing links to your own channel. Some server managers don’t like shameless self-promotion and will ban you. If you want to market your channel properly on Discord, you need to pick and choose the right servers to join.

For example, vidIQ is a great place to share your content while learning more about succeeding on YouTube.

9. Jump On Reddit

Reddit is a great place to promote virtually any brand. From creating a subreddit specifically for your fans to joining other relevant gaming conversations, you can spread the word of your channel while sharing information or helping others with various issues.

However, you don’t want to come off as spammy. No one likes a person just jumping into the middle of a conversation and linking their Twitch channel. By engaging and interacting with others, you can pique their interest without being overly blunt.

Reddit can be a difficult prospect for some. In many ways, it can be a hit-or-miss marketing method. It all comes down to how you promote yourself and being part of an active community.

Nonetheless, I’ve seen how much of a positive impact a properly placed link can be for video content. So, it’s worth exploring, especially if you have a video that helps someone with a question.

10. Consider Giveaways and Contests

Giveaways and contests can quickly boost your branding. A lot of people love free stuff, and the mere mention of something fun can bring them in droves. However, there is a prominent caveat to doing so.

A lot of people just want freebies and have no interest in being part of your community. Once the giveaway is over, most of them will move on to the next streamer.

I often find it’s better to do giveaways and contests for your existing audience. It may help gather a few new viewers in the process, but you’re essentially rewarding those who have stuck with you over the long term.

But, everyone has their opinion on how well these work, so it’s completely up to you. Just keep in mind that many people following you just for the goodies aren’t really going to support you over the long term.

11. Paid Promotion and Ads

Paid advertisements and promotions can quickly get the word out about your channel. However, promoting your channel in such a manner doesn’t guarantee income. Because of the low return-on-investment advertising a Twitch channel, it’s not often the best choice.

This is especially true if you’re a new streamer. It may wind up being nothing more than a drain on what little money you already have.

The cost of paid promotions and ads often varies as each online platform has different kinds of marketing plans. But unless you’re providing some high-quality content or have something to sell directly to viewers, ads can get quite expensive to maintain.

5 Prime Benefits of Marketing Your Twitch Channel

Promote Twitch Channel

There is no denying that you need to promote your Twitch channel. Although it takes a bit more work, there are five key benefits of why it’s worth the effort.

These benefits include:

  • Building a Community
A community of viewers will stay with you for the long haul and are more likely to buy your merch and help you earn ad revenue.
  • Engaging More Viewers
The more eyes you have on your content, the better. Depending on your personality and the topics you cover, you can engage a lot of people relatively quickly.
  • Low Monetary Investment
Most of the methods to promote your Twitch channel require very little in terms of a financial investment. Well, with the exception of paid advertising.
  • Diversifying Income Streams
Promoting your Twitch stream can open all kinds of doors for diversying your income. Some of the methods off the top of my head include tips, merch sales, affiliate sales, and ad revenue from other platforms.
  • Making More Money
All of the marketing for your channel equates to making more money overall. If you want to turn your streaming into a viable full-time income, people need to know you exist.

Never underestimate the value of good marketing.

What’s Your Favorite Method for Marketing?

Two prominent methods we use to promote our Twitch channel are multistreaming on YouTube and embedding live broadcasts on the blog. These two methods have helped drive the most interest, but Reddit caused one of my videos to go semi-viral for about six months.

The hardest part about marketing is the time it takes to do it right. To promote your channel properly, it takes a great deal of external engagement, especially on social media. It’s easy to see how larger corporations and brands pay a social media manager a full-time wage.

Try different methods while keeping an eye on your stream’s viewership stats. You can get an idea of what is working and what isn’t. Then, double down on the methods that do work.
