Using the Unofficial Valheim World Generator to Get Around
The worlds of Valheim are seemingly endless. You’d be hard-pressed to play in the same world more than once unless you purposely enter the map seed. And since a lot of key points are spread across the vastness of Valheim, a world generator app is exceptionally useful.
In my case, it was all about trying to find a swamp so I could mine some iron. I spent about two weeks looking for an ideal place before I decided to just use the Unofficial Valheim World Generator.
Although I don’t use this app while recording the hardcore playthrough (that would be cheating), it has saved me a lot of headaches when looking for specific points.
I once wrecked two boats trying to find Haldor – long story.
Using the Valheim World Generator App
The Valheim World Generator will show the locations of bosses, traders, and everything else that is significant in the game. And once you enter your map, you begin to understand just how massive Valheim is and how easy you can sink hundreds of hours’ worth of exploration.
There are a couple of ways you can use the map generator.
Method 1: Entering Your Seed
From Valheim’s world screen, write down your seed.

Go to the Valheim World Generator, enter your seed, and press the green “Go!” button.

The app will take a second to generate a map from the seed, so don’t close the window if it seems stuck. It can take a minute, depending on a lot of technical factors.
Once the map is generated, you’ll be able to see it on the screen.

From here, you can zoom in and out, enable certain points of interest, or download the map for images or data. For instance, you can print out the map to help while you play or maybe if you want to geek out and pin it to your wall. Or you can use it in a blog post.
The bottom line is that you can download an image of the map in Valheim directly from the generator.
Since I have dual monitors, I just have the world generator open at the same time as Valheim and just type in the seed. It’s handy, and Valheim is one of the few games that don’t fully minimize when moving the mouse from it in Windows.
Method 2: Uploading from Steam Files
If you’re not sure of the seed or have other issues writing it down, you can upload the map file directly from Steam’s library (if that is where you purchased the game).
Click on the blue “upload” button on the world generator.

This will launch another window for uploading your files.
The developer took the time to add instructions on how to upload your file, but the TLDR of it is that you can drag-and-drop your files into the window or choose files to add manually.
The default location for the Valheim map files on a PC is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<your steam id>\892970\remote\worlds
Upload both the DBF and FWL files. To select more than one file on a PC, hold down your CTRL key while clicking them both. Or you can drag the mouse to select both files. Either way, you need to add the DBF and FWL simultaneously for the Valheim World Generator to pull the information.

The map generator will then scan the files before showing you the map of the world.

What Else Can You Do with the Valheim World Generator?
The Valheim World Generator isn’t just a mapping system. There are also a few things you can do with the app that may be of some use to you.
For instance, you can:
Add Custom Pins
Right-clicking anywhere on the map opens the option to create custom pins. You can add a wide range of icons and colors to highlight specifics, such as adding your primary home base.

These locations will be visible to those you share the map with in the lobby as well as the map you download as an image.
Create a Temporary Lobby
If you play Valheim remotely with others, you can create a temporary lobby to share the map. You can create either a read-only lobby or one that allows others to edit the map and custom pins.

This is quite helpful for your party to come up with a strategy of where to find key points on the map.
When sharing, you can copy the link directly from the Valheim World Generator and place it in apps like Discord if your party is on voice chat. This makes it convenient for everyone to be on the same page, so to speak, about where to travel and find points of interest.
Link the Map for Blogs or Social Media
Perhaps you want to share your latest adventure on social media or in a blog post. You can copy the sharing link from the generator and place it anywhere you could normally add a link.
Remember that the pins you create will also be visible to those who click to open the map.
How Long Will This Generator Be Supported?
At the time of this post, there is only one more biome being released before the official launch of the 1.0 version of Valheim. I’ve used it for the past several months without fail, and it seems to be quite a stable platform.
So, it all comes down to whether the developers of Valheim add something that breaks the generator or if the developer decides not to keep making updates.
Then, there’s also the possibility that the Valheim World Generator itself will remain relevant for years to come as long as the developers don’t do anything drastic with the code.
The bottom line is that both Valheim and the map generator are based on Unity’s coding. Or, more specifically, the “random primitives” within the Unity engine. Since it is highly unlikely the developers would dump Unity in favor of another engine so far in development, the map generator should be fully functional until the website’s owner decides it’s no longer worth the maintenance.
It happens more often than you think, especially with WordPress plugins. There have been a lot of awesome tools that were removed because developers decided to scuttle the project.
I say, enjoy the world generator for now while diving into Valheim. It may not last forever, but it can be extremely useful in the time being.
Are Map Generators Cheating?
Map generators are extremely helpful for those who get lost or can’t find specific key points in the game. As I pointed out earlier, I spent weeks looking for a single sunken crypt only to find out that it would have taken longer based on my location.
Sure, you can spend more time exploring. But sometimes you just get too frustrated and decide to look up your area.
Now, I don’t do this for the hardcore series of Valheim, as that would defeat the purpose. I’m sure I’ll get very lost at some point during the playthrough. But that’s part of the allure – not knowing where I am and whether I’ll get curb-stomped by a group of trolls.
